We are now at the wedding! We see the happy couple standing in the receiving line, accepting gifts and thanking everyone for coming. As it turns out the bride is Sudha, Devi's old roommate. Ram and Balam take their turn and go to sit down. Upon further discussion, the bride and groom realize that neither one of them knows who Ram is. Ram also suspects something is up, as he doesn't see Mr. Dutta anywhere. They take a seat next to a pretty young lady and Balam tries to strike up a conversation with her. She's far from interested, and tells him in a none-too-polite manner to mind his own business.
Devi
makes her entry at the wedding, and Sudha mentions there is a stranger in the
crowd. Devi tells her she'll handle them, and heads over.
Balam is still attempting to smooth-talk the woman, but she's not having any of it. Devi interrupts them by asking who they are. We get a little doodle on the soundtrack to let us know that Ram is interested in her. He also leers her up and down in a pretty blatant way. She asks all the right questions and they figure out that Balam has screwed up the date for the wedding of Mr. Dutta's daughter. Ram gets up to leave, and tells Balam to get their gift back.
Some of the other guests have noticed the disturbance and come over. They accuse Ram and Balam of running a racket where they pose as guests and make off with some of the gifts. Balam and Ram try to convince the crowd they are not crooks. Ram tells them they've brought a gift worth 50,000 rupees, and tells Balam to go and open it to prove he is a wealthy businessman, not a thief.
As you may recall, Balam did not purchase a 50,000 rupee gift. He tells Ram this plan of his is a bad idea. He repeatedly tells Ram not to open the gift, as they will get beaten up by the other guests. Ram is undeterred, and proceeds to open the box. When he sees what is actually inside the package, he gives Balam a stern glare, then they decide they'd best be going.
Once
they are at home, sounds of a battle come through a doorway. Balam staggers out
sporting a new collection of bruises and tousled clothing. We learn from his
ranting to himself that he's been beaten up and fired by Ram. He staggers around
for quite some time singing to himself about how he's been beaten and fired.
Yes, it's a little redundant.
Ram is wandering the house carrying a newspaper. He takes a seat in his dining room to read it, when he hears Balam's caterwauling. Balam is sitting under the dining room table and singing loudly. He crawls out to beg Ram not to fire him. Ram tells him that if he can track down Devi's address then he will still have a job. Balam crawls off to do as he asks.
Over at Devi's house, she is practicing dancing with an instructor. Things seem to be going well for a while, then the sounds of loud, jarring music can be heard drowning out her instructor. She looks distressed and goes to see what all the noise is about. Her uncle is in the next room enjoying the music that is blasting out of the house next door. He tells Devi that a very wealthy man has purchased the house for more than it was worth, and that if she has a problem with the noise she can just shut her windows.
Devi
isn't too impressed with her uncle's plan. She tells him she'll have to take
care of it herself since he's not going to help. She heads outside and tries to
get the new neighbor's attention. When she can't be heard over the music, she
goes up to their terrace and throws a baseball-sized conch shell at the
glass on his door.
When he hears the glass breaking, Ram angrily comes out and asks who threw the shell. Devi is not pleased to see who her new neighbor is. Ram makes lots of jokes and comments of a flirtatious nature which fall on deaf ears. Devi stomps back into the house.
That
night, a cartoon lightning storm is raging outside while Devi attempts to sleep.
If you were to guess she has a dream about the Raincoat Man and the shooting,
you'd be right. She bolts upright in bed and pants for a moment. As she tries to
calm herself down, we see a white car pull up outside. The door opens, and a
raincoat-clad figure emerges. Oh no! He enters the house and begins ascending
the stairs. He opens the door to Devi's room, and finds her sitting on the bed
with her face on her arms. She looks up and notices the dark figure in the
doorway. She grabs her lamp and tells them that if they come any closer she'll
hit them with it.
