Afterthoughts
This movie did not have a big impact on me. I enjoyed parts of it, and rolled my eyes at other moments. I wasn't particularly impressed, nor was I completely disgusted with it. A nice, middle of the road mystery that wasn't a total waste of time.
Madhuri Dixit did a fine job of portraying Devi. Aside from the requisite suspension of disbelief (we are talking about psychics after all) she did a convincing job of showing what an earnest and determined woman Devi is. She does not back down from her goals and carries on despite the naysayers she has to put up with.
Jackie Shroff does a good job as well. He is as charismatic and cool as he needs to be to win Devi over, and genuinely appears to care for her while she's having her problems. His evolution and eventual fate were interesting, and I liked how his character ended up. A touch not often seen in movies these days.
Javed Jaffrey was interesting as Sunil. He fared the best in the fight scenes, and it looks like he feels comfortable doing the action material. Now if they could only choreograph the hits to look a tad more convincing, and he'd be set. Also, as Devi's sympathetic friend he provided a good counterbalance to all of the non-believers they encountered.
Jay Kalgutkar was very convincing in the role of Jagmohan. You don't doubt for a second that he could be very dangerous and quick to anger. He also has some piercing, bloodshot eyes that only further his homicidal maniac image. I've not seen him in anything else, but it would be hard to picture him as anyone else.
In summary, a decent show with an unusual conclusion (albeit somewhat incomplete). Not a tragedy if you miss it, but also not a tragedy if you watch it!
Negatives:
Repetition, repetition, repetition, and some repetition. I think this movie would be about 30 minutes shorter if they cut out the constant replays of Devi's visions.
I didn't much care for the music in this one. Only one or two songs were all that catchy. In particular, "Pyar Tera Pyar" was just grating.
The fights were terrible. The stunts were cool enough, but the execution of them were so obviously fake that they never once convinced me that anyone was getting hit.
No wrap-up at the end. Quite a few plot threads were left dangling, and the movie just petered out.
Positives:
Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff were as good as they always are. No major complaints with either of them!
While most of the music wasn't that engaging (at least for me), the few songs that were good were very enjoyable.
This is one of the few movies I've seen where the cops were not shown to be corrupt or sadistic. They don't seem very willing to help in the investigation of the skeleton in the house, but at least they're not shooting people in the face in this one.
While not as elaborately crafted as Gupt, this was a serviceable mystery. It was never boring, which is good to say about any movie!
Say what you will about his odd manner of dressing, but Sunil is quite the entertainer! For this film's rating, I will use a shot of him from his first big number of our show, "Ladiki Ladiki."
