I'm going to start putting these warnings at the tops of pages that contain some upsetting scenes. If you would rather not read about them, skip any pages with this note at the top.
The next day is visiting day at the prison, and Didi brings Pinky to see Shivani. They are thrilled to see each other, and have a happy hug. Shivani asks Pinky how she's doing, and Pinky tells her that the previous evening Mohanlal stole her necklace. Shivani is shocked to hear this, and looks to Didi for confirmation. Shivani says that Mohanlal has lost his decency, but tells Pinky that it doesn't matter - she'll get her a new one. Shivani asks her lots of other questions, about if she's behaving, eating well, and so on. Pinky tells her that she misses her very much, and wants her to come home. She then adds that she also misses Ashok, and asks Shivani where he is.
Being
put on the spot, Shivani conjures a story about how Ashok was on a long flight,
and they ran out of gas. He had to land in a far off place, with very nice toys
and friendly animals to play with. She says he will bring all of these home to
play with Pinky when he can. Pinky, being the helpful child she is, says that if
Ashok won't come home, then she will go to him. At the thought of what that
really means, Shivani gets the chills and holds Pinky tight. Unfortunately for
them both, the guard comes and tells them that visiting time is over. They pry
Pinky away from Shivani and take them to their respective places.
We then jump over to Vijay's engagement ceremony to Rupali, the dancer. He tells everyone that he wants to change Rupali's name before they are to be wed. Any takers on guessing what he wants to call her?
We
go back to prison where all the women are being herded through some tunnels to
the main yard. Shivani asks Nisha what they're doing, since this is out of the
ordinary. Nisha explains that an important minister must be visiting. When
Shivani doesn't understand, Nisha goes further to add that when those occasions
come up, the prison serves as a brothel for the VIPs.
The women are all lined up in the yard so the minister may take his pick. To my horror, the minister is being played by the laughing man from Baazigar. Betsy the Jailor tells him that they've got a new girl in that she thinks he'll really like. He tells her not to be so hasty, and he'll pick who he wants to. However, once he sees Shivani he agrees that she's just what he's in the mood for.
He puckers up as if to kiss her, but Shivani lurches as if she's having stomach problems. This goes back and forth for a few rounds until she finally throws up in his face. She runs out of the line and steadies herself against the wall. Nisha also breaks ranks and goes to ask her what's going on. Shivani tells her that she's pregnant, and it's making her sick. Betsy comes over with the clear intention of beating Shivani to death, but Nisha intervenes. Betsy grabs Nisha and asks the minister if she'll do for his evening's company, and he says at this point he'll take anything. The three of them go off and leave Shivani to listen to the screams from Nisha as she's dragged away.
We
cut from this scene of horror to another. At Didi's house, Mohanlal is slapping
Pinky and telling her to keep quiet. Didi tells him to leave her alone, but he
goes off on a rant about how people are talking about him sheltering a killer's
child. Apparently he's losing what little face he has in the town because of it.
He commands Didi to throw Pinky out of the house. Didi doesn't back down, and
says that she's going nowhere, and they'll all stay right where they are.
Mohanlal tells her that she can just go with Pinky, and throws them both out of
the house, locking the door behind them. If you ask me, that's better that
staying in the house with that child-beating lush.
In
order to break the unbelievable amounts of soul-crushing tension, the filmmakers
wisely insert a Johnny Lever scene (did I just type that?!) here. It seems the
system is having a tough time deciding what type of prison Champa belongs in.
He's been bounced back and forth between men's and women's jails, and is now in
front of Betsy. She tells him to get into the women's prison garments, when he
asks her how much she makes. He offers her a job with his little group, saying
that she already looks like the rest of them. Personally, I enjoyed that little
stab at Betsy's looks, but she doesn't accept his offer.
Out in the yard, Shivani is on sweeping detail. She's going over some steps with a broom when she notices that Nisha is out, and is leaning against the wall in a catatonic state. Shivani rushes over to see her and ask if she is all right.
