Anjali
comes over and they give each other "five" with a slapping sound so loud I
thought one would drop to the floor. Anjali has Seema's notes from History
class, and mentions that she noticed a love letter hidden inside them. Seema
doesn't know what she's talking about, so Anjali pulls her aside and shows her
what she means. Anjali reveals a sheet of paper that was buried within the pages
of her notes, with a large heart with an arrow through it drawn on it. Anjali
starts teasing Seema about her admirer, but wonders aloud as to whom this person
might be. Seema tells her that all will be revealed at the appropriate time, and
snatches the notes away from Anjali.
Seema decides that she wants to head to the canteen, and drags Anjali along with her. Anjali protests that they will be missing a class if they were to do this, but Seema tells her that she'll just copy the notes from her friend Ravi, who apparently does anything Seema tells him to.
Speak
of the devil, Ravi shows up just as they were talking about him. Sure enough, he
tells Seema she need not attend any classes today, as he will take down all the
notes she'll need and let her copy them. Seema tells him that she knew that out
of all the people in school, he would be the one she could count on for help.
That sound you hear is me rolling my eyes.
Seema thanks him and runs off, while Ravi stares longingly at her as she departs. To make that last little display of Seema's even worse, she's off to go see the admirer that we just spoke of. In a little clearing, we see Ajay looking around for her, then scampering over to a tree where he pretends to read a book as she draws near. Seema bristles at his apparent disinterest, and yanks the book out of his hands. She then plops her head down in front of him, and tells him (in not so many words) that she's angry since he's been gone, and wasn't eagerly looking for her when he returned.
As his retort, Ajay grabs the book back, and tells her that books are better than girlfriends, since they don't make you wait around for them to show up. Ajay points out that she is six and a half minutes late for their meeting, and he's "very angry" about it. She asks him to forgive her, but he tells her no. She then asks him to punish her, and he tells her that she must sit there quietly until he's done reading his book. She doesn't manage to sit still very long, leading us to our first song for the film, "Kitabhe Bahut Si." The songs on this DVD are without subtitles, so we're on our own for this one. I'm not sure what makes Seema look down her own shirt, but I'm sure she has a good reason.
(06/09/07) Update! Friendly and helpful reader Carol writes in with some clarification:
"I was reading your review on the movie Baazigar, and I noticed that you were confused as to why Shilpa Shetty looks down her shirt during the song "Kitaben Bahut si". I'll admit its a funny scene, but there's a reason. Right before that, Ajay (Shah Rukh) says/sings the line "tere dil pe saarii kahaanii likhii hai" to Seema (Shilpa), which means in English "Your entire life story is written on your heart". So Seema 'checks' her heart to see if it is really true (guess not, because she looks angry when she looks back up). I just wanted to clear that up."
Thanks for the help, Carol!

A lot of odd things happen during this song, such as the traditional Indian dance, The Twist. Also, Ajay ends up playing tennis while only wearing a towel. However the important thing we see is poor, misled Ravi who spots Seema cavorting with her real boyfriend.
After
the song, we get a little exposition. Seema is unhappy that they have to meet in
secret. Ajay tells her that there's a reason for this - her father would never
accept him, since he's an unemployed person with not much in the line of
prospects. He does promise her that the day will come when she will be his
forever.
He does chastise her for being late (we're led to believe this is a regular occurrence), and asks to see her watch to make sure she's got it set correctly. When Seema looks at the time, she panics. She remembers that she was supposed to collect her sister from the airport today. However, it's too late now, and she's probably already at home.
