We
cut immediately to the pit at the race where Madan is going on and on about how
good he is, and that he's stepping down after this race to let someone else win
for a change. One of the officials for the race tells him that there's a new kid
entering this time, and he's reportedly very, very good. This Vicky Malhotra
actually stands a chance of winning on his own, but Madan doesn't look too
concerned. He says that whether the race is with cars or with life, he never
loses. Priya agrees, and says that no matter who this new kid is, he doesn't
have a hope of beating her dad.
As they continue to inflate Madan's ego, the camera pans away from them and over to the new kid's pit. We have a dramatic hat removal, showing us the face of Vicky Malhotra. Much to the soundtrack's surprise, it seems that Vicky is also Ajay! His brilliant disguise consists solely of brown contact lenses.
With
a little pre-race fanfare, we finally roll the cars out onto the starting grid.
Vicky and Madan exchange steely glares of determination, then they're off! We
zoom about the track for a while, and watch as Vicky takes the lead and holds it
for most of the race. Several cuts back and forth show Priya looking more and
more agitated as her father's heretofore guaranteed victory seems to be in
jeopardy.
On the very last stretch of the track, we see a close-up of Vicky's foot as he eases up on the accelerator, allowing Madan to pass him and cross the finish line first. Down in the pits after the race, Priya lets out another ear-shattering squeal as she congratulates her father on winning his final race. Madan thanks her, and asks one of the pit crew where Vicky is. He wants to meet the man that put up such a fight.
Vicky has beaten him to the punch though, and has sought him out. Vicky gives us the sweatiest introduction ever as he pulls off his helmet in slow motion, shaking his head back and forth while sweat flies everywhere. That's how Priya likes 'em though, and she's instantly smitten with this newcomer. Vicky congratulates Madan sincerely, but Madan asks if there was something wrong with Vicky's car. Vicky tells him no, there were no problems. Madan asks him why he slowed down at the end of the race, and Vicky replies that he has always looked to Madan as a guru, and he didn't want him to lose the last race of his life.
Priya
asks him if he's saying he lost on purpose. Vicky replies that sometimes one
must lose something in order to win something. Madan asks him what it was that
he was wanting to win. Vicky replies that he wanted to win Madan's blessings.
Madan tells Vicky that he likes his style, and asks him where he's from. Vicky
tells him he's from Bombay, and he owns a car dealership there. Madan tells him
that he was looking for a sports car for his daughter, so if Vicky sees
something he thinks she'll like, he should bring it over to him. Vicky says that
he was headed their direction soon anyway, and he'll bring something along with
him.
Madan heads off to get his pictures taken, and Vicky goes his own way. Priya calls out to him to wait for a minute, and Vicky knows what she wants. He tells her she wants to know why he really lost the race. He tells her he did it for her sake. After all, she was convinced that her father was going to win. If he didn't she'd be heartbroken, and he couldn't do that to such a pretty girl. He reminds her that he did say sometimes in order to win something, one must lose first. He tells her that someone who wins after losing is known as a "baazigar," (the subtitles say this translates to "juggler," but I'll refer you to the reader comment for a more accurate translation!). He asks her what he said, and she repeats it. With a confident smile, Vicky walks off, leaving Priya there looking very smitten indeed.
The readers respond! Our friend Rohan writes in to tell us:
"Vicky tells Priya that someone who loses to win is known as a 'baazigar'. I guess I can see where the subtitles were going with 'juggler', but it actually means 'gambler'. That explains the coin toss Ajay does at the start of the film right before the title credits."
Thanks for the clarification, Rohan!
That evening in her hotel room, Priya has what I can only describe as a "love spaz attack." She runs all over the room in her nightgown, flopping on the furniture and beaming from ear to ear. This leads us to the next musical number, "Baazigar, O Baazigar."
