The
horrid night finally passes, and we cut to a little fair at the beach. In the
midst of children playing and people enjoying themselves, we see Swati and
Vishal sitting on the ground. They say nothing to each other for a bit, then
Vishal offers to get her a drink. She accepts his offer, and he goes off to pick
one up. While he's away, the camera pushes in slowly until all we can see is
Swati resting her head on her arm. She looks up sharply and finds herself
completely alone on the beach. All of the rides and carts, and more importantly,
people - all have vanished. She is left alone on the sand, looking at a solitary
figure a few meters ahead of her. She recognizes this woman as the phantom that
has been stalking her, and takes off running.
Like all good movie monster chases, Swati is running as fast as her legs will carry her, but her pursuer does just fine with a few slow steps towards her. A couple of back and forth cuts show Swati becoming more frightened and eventually running smack into Vishal, who has reappeared along with all of the other stuff. Swati looks back and sees the apparition has gone, and she gives Vishal a look to say, "I give up." They finally decide it's time to talk to a professional, and they head off to a hospital for some tests.
Swati
is sent out to wait in the hall while the doctor goes over his findings with
Vishal. Why Swati can't hear this firsthand is not brought up, but I suppose
that's not too important. The doctor tells Vishal that Swati's sleepwalking is
likely due to a severe emotional trauma. He believes the news of Manjeet's death
in the apartment has upset her greatly, and it is likely the cause of all the
problems. He does reassure Vishal, and tells him that this is something that can
be treated by medication. Vishal goes out into the hallway and tells Swati that
the doctor says she's lost it, but he can't keep a straight face and they get to
giggling. Swati takes the news pretty well, if you ask me. I think Vishal is
overdue for a bonk on the head.
We
see them getting out of the car in the garage at the apartment building, and
head for the entrance. As they pass the camera, we linger on something that has
popped up in a few shots now, so I'll call attention to it. There is a block of
concrete that has several broken bars of rebar sticking up out of it. It kind of
suggests itself to be something that may be important later on. Moving on, we
see them cruise past the watchman, who is sound asleep in his chair.
When they arrive in the apartment, Vishal gets a call from the office. Some important doings are going down and they need him there right away. He asks them to wait until tomorrow morning, but whatever it is has to happen right now. Swati assures him that she'll be fine, and sends him on his way. To help her cope with her solitude, she picks up Millennium Boy and fiddles with his hair.
Later that evening Vishal returns home. He passes the vacant seat of the watchman and heads upstairs. He finds the door to his apartment open, and he rushes inside to find Swati. He searches each room calling her name, but she is nowhere to be found! Millennium Boy sits idly by and does nothing to help. Vishal goes out to the elevator, and notices the Thakkar's door is also open. He checks inside, and finds Swati sitting in a near-catatonic state next to the silent old woman who is still chanting and rubbing the necklace. Vishal slowly reaches over to her and touches Swati's shoulder. She jerks to alertness, and looks around as if she doesn't know where she is or how she got there. Vishal leads her out and back to their own place.
Swati
tells him that all she remembers is Bai leaving for the day. She doesn't
remember even going to sleep, so she's not sure how she could have sleep-walked
over to the other apartment. Vishal tries to help her calm down, but Swati is
terrified that there is something seriously wrong with her. She starts to cry
and hangs onto Vishal for dear life as he strokes her hair and reassures her.
Eventually she falls asleep, and he goes out to the balcony for a smoke. As he looks out of the window at the pouring rain, he doesn't notice Swati moving silently behind him. She walks through the living room and out the door, and he's none the wiser.
We cut to the watchman, who is once again sound asleep in his chair. An out of focus shot shows us the elevator door open, and it sure looks like Swati emerging. A slow zoom on the watchman's face shows him waking up, and looking at us with a puzzled expression. Back upstairs, Vishal finishes his cigarette and notices the front door is open. He closes it, then gets suspicious. He goes up to the master bedroom and sees that Swati is no longer there!
