Mallika
gets a bit teary-eyed towards the end of the song, which does draw lingering
glances from Chandan, Manmo, and Sanjeev. Oh, and Jaidev is constantly stalking
around the little area where most of the singing is happening, staring intently
at Mallika the whole time. Once they're done with the song, we have a quick jump
cut to a press conference the next day. The reporters really only have one line
of questioning: "We thought you and Rahul were an item, so what's he doing
getting married to this other singer?" Mallika says that at one time, Rahul had
proposed to her, and that she refused him. That's all there is to say about that
relationship, according to her. However, the reporters won't let it go.
One particularly tenacious lady brings up the whole "you lived as husband and wife for a while" point. She wants to know what is the nature of her association with Rahul these days. Mallika phrases her response in a curious manner. She says that the same relationship exists now that there always was. She then lets that sink in for a moment before adding the clarification that they are dear friends.
We
join Rashmi at home where she's preening in front of a mirror. Sanjeev enters
and throws a magazine down on the bed in disgust. He asks her if she's read the
latest article on her good friend Mallika. He says that he also saw the
interview on television, and that Mallika admitted to having physical relations
with Rahul. He adds that she said they'll continue to do so (aha, see! What did
I tell you.). As Rashmi looks all shocked and gasps, Sanjeev says that it's good
that they're not actually married yet, and they can cancel this mess before it
gets out of hand. He points out that Rahul has been fooling around with Mallika
for certain, but there's a good chance that he's been frisky with a few other
ladies as well.
As Sanjeev goes on about this last line, Rashmi is nearly hyperventilating. Perhaps she's thinking back to a certain rain-swept night not too long ago? Sanjeev calms himself a bit and tells Rashmi that Rahul doesn't really love her, and she will not be happy marrying him. He asks that she forget about Rahul, and get on with her life. After a light pat on the cheek, Sanjeev leaves the room while Rashmi looks extremely pissed off. She grabs the magazine from the bed and flips through the pages, searching for the incriminating article. Once she's read it, she's nearly ready to burst.
We
cut over to Rahul's place where he's on the phone with the publisher of the
magazine. There were about two dozen news teams at the press conference, so I'm
not sure why they're all ganging up on this one magazine, but whatever. Rahul
says that they had no right to "spice up" the article, and that this has had a
serious impact on his personal life. The publisher must say something to the
tune of "we didn't change what she said - she really was quoted in the text,"
causing Rahul to reply that he'll talk to Mallika himself and get the truth. If
the publisher is lying, he'll be taken to court. As he is concluding the call,
he notices that Rashmi is waiting for him in his living room. Rahul, ever think
to lock your door? Rashmi has a few choice words for Rahul, mostly involving
"mistake," "wrong," and "jerk." One of those might have been my imagination.
She
tells Rahul that he has betrayed her, and that she hates him now. Rahul says
that she has to believe that his relationship to Mallika was in the past, and
has no bearing on his love for Rashmi. She doesn't believe him, and tells him
not to try and convince her otherwise. She read in "a book somewhere" that men
are all predators, hunting to satisfy their lust. She's kicking herself for
giving in to him that night. Rahul says that if all he was doing was preying on
her for physical desires, then there would be no need for him to keep the
engagement - he's already had her physically.
She basically tells him, "nice try," but she accuses him of wanting to marry her so that he could take advantage of her whenever he wants to. She pulls his ring off of her finger and throws it in his face, then stomps out of the room. Rahul calls after her, but she's not stopping this time. Rahul thinks for a moment, then decides it's time to pay a visit to the source of this latest problem.
