We
cut from the spiritual fervor at Jimmy's place to find David Brown, manager of
the disco stars, in his office. Someone we don't know asks him if Nicky will
come. To what, we don't know. That's not the issue here! Anyway, David assures
Mr. Mystery that of course she will attend. After all she is his daughter! At
that moment the phone rings. Nicky is calling... to cancel! David is very angry
and asks why she can't come (to what?!). Nicky responds that Sam has told her
not to go (wherever!). David is nearly frothing at the mouth now, and tells her
"to Hell with Sam!" We can see Nicky is actually sitting next to Sam, and he can
hear the shouting. Sam disconnects the call with a smarmy grin.
David is angry but unshaken, and says the show will go on. Back at Sam's we see that the evening has progressed! Nicky is apparently unclothed and is lying next to a shirtless Sam. He tells her that his sister Rita and her sidekicks are planning to go to the show and throw their shoes at this new artist that David is grooming. He promises that it will be a debacle for the ages or some such.
Sure enough, we cut to the show where a line of young women are all standing at the front of the crowd, each holding their shoes. David goes out to introduce his new protégée. With the call of, "Come, sing, and conquer!" (seriously) we see the dramatic entrance of Jimmy. Jimmy steps out wearing something similar to Luke Skywalker's outfit from Star Wars, only with a silver dance belt. Immediately Rita starts chanting that they won't listen to the new guy. The audience joins in her jeering, as David looks a bit nervous. David tells the band to start playing as the first girl in the crowd throws one shoe. Jimmy catches it, and casually tells her to throw the other one as well to complete the pair.
Jimmy then works the shoes into his dance number as we roll into "Jara Mudke Mila Aankhe."

Jimmy's raw talent and charisma win over the crowd in seconds, with only Rita left to uphold the defiant act. She is made fun of for the whole song as everyone else gives into the magical prancing and gyrations of Our Hero. Please don't miss the bit where slapping your own face and spanking your own backside is made into the new dance that everyone can enjoy. Once all of the music has died down, David leaps onto the stage and triumphantly shouts out that Jimmy has "done it." (shrug)
The
next day we see Rita out for a walk in the bright sunshine, oddly accompanied by
a smoke machine. It's pretty clear that this is not fog, or any other kind of
ominous atmosphere, as the smoke seems to be very, very localized. She bumps
into Jimmy walking along the same path but in the opposite direction. This might
be symbolism of some sort, but then again I might be reading way too into
this movie's plot.
Rita asks him what he wants, so he sizes her up. He tells her that he can tell she's pretty, but arrogant. She's also smart (how he can tell, I'm not sure. All she's said to him thus far is "Booooo! We don't want him!") but she's too rich for her own good.
Rita, never one to back down from a challenge explains that she knows she's pretty and she's proud of it. She also explains that her stinky brain comes from her dad, who is extremely rich. She mocks him for being an old street performer, but Jimmy defends himself by telling her that rich men like her father condemned him to stay in the streets forever, but he's headed for the top. He swears that one day she will ask for his autograph on her lips, but he doesn't know if he'll give it to her or not.
Rita replies, "My foot!" Not knowing what else to say, Jimmy takes off her little scarf and wipes his shoes with it. He throws it to the ground, then walks away. Rita also turns and stamps off, leaving the scarf where it fell. All the while, the orchestra lurches back and forth over the same three chords to raise the tension, or something of that nature. It's really quite effective. *cough*
Back
at the hotel, David is on the phone with someone to plan the next show. Mom and
Jimmy are also in the room, and they flinch when they hear that Bombay is the
next stop. We hear the jeers of the town calling them thieves as they look
worried. David seems oblivious to their discomfort as he tells them that after
this show, Jimmy will be everywhere with products and endorsements all over the
place. Mom says that she can't let Jimmy go to Bombay, but he tells her that
Bombay has some debts to repay him, and they're going to collect.
We see a montage of them traveling past all the places Jimmy used to sing, and the pain is just so overwhelming. As they pass Oberoi's place, David knows what's up. He tells Jimmy that this is the house of his old enemy. Jimmy asks him how he knows that, so David explains that he too has a little enmity going with the Oberoi family.
Speaking of Sam, let's have a look and see what he's up to.
