Ah,
we now know that this is a birthday party for the Mayor's daughter. Mom
overhears the discussion and asks Jimmy where they're going, so he gives her the
details. She asks what she's supposed to do at this function, so Jimmy tells her
she should go just to see how all the rich people all fight to be near him just
to have a picture taken. Mom agrees to go!
We go to the party, where Sam is seen giving a lesson on how to properly disco dance to the tune of "You're The One That I Want" from Grease played on a ballpark pipe organ (I'm not kidding). Outside, we see Jimmy's car arriving to the excitement of everyone. All of Sam's people run off at the news that Jimmy has arrived, and Sam tries to detain them to no avail.
Everyone crowds around Jimmy as Sam and Rita both give him dirty looks. P.N. goes to comfort his son. Sam tells him that Jimmy has stolen his fans, and as such, his future. He swears he will kill Jimmy for this. P.N. tells Sam to have courage, and they'll figure something out. Everyone files into the next room for the grand cake-cutting ceremony. As they do so, Mom notices P.N. is there, and they have a Significant Glance. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy notices him as well and looks incredibly distressed.
The
Mayor somehow doesn't notice Jimmy's "I've just eaten some bad seafood"
expression and introduces him to the crowd. He tells them all to give Jimmy a
big eye (yes, he does say this, in English too) and everyone applauds. After
Jimmy fails to acknowledge the crowd's approval, the Mayor finally takes a
closer look. He asks Jimmy if he is crying, to which Jimmy applies that he is.
He explains that there is someone among the guests that has done him wrong, and
he explains a bit of his history. It's about this time that Rita puts two and
two together, and realizes that this is the same boy that she used to love
listening to and prance around the garden with.
Dolly, the Mayor's daughter, looks on in anguish as her pop hero goes to pieces in front of everyone. Jimmy tells her that his gift to her for her 18th birthday is his big display of weeping. A bit unconventional perhaps, but I'll bet she remembers this one! Dolly asks Jimmy to at least cut the cake. He does manage to do this as the crowd claps more or less in unison, and offers up the most drunken, tone-deaf rendition of the Happy Birthday song I have ever heard. Dolly announces that this is the best birthday any young woman could ask for. There's a lot I don't understand about teenage girls, so this might actually be the case. Personally, I would have thought otherwise.
Jimmy and his mother remember some of the promises that young Jimmy made, and Mom feeds him in front of everyone. Rita chooses this awkward moment to come over and confess to Jimmy that she didn't realize he was the childhood minstrel that she once liked. At this point the Mayor brings P.N. over for an introduction. P.N. offers his hand for a hearty shake, but Jimmy looks away.
The
Mayor asks him what's going on, so Jimmy explains that he can't shake the hand
that has slapped his mother. Jimmy tells his mother not to worry - now that he's
famous, Oberoi can't slap her in public or have her hauled off to jail on empty
charges of theft. Jimmy apologizes to Dolly for spoiling her party, but Dolly's
all fired up.
Dolly goes over to Oberoi and demands that he apologize to Jimmy and his mother for what he did. The Mayor tries to restrain her, but she threatens to kill Oberoi if he doesn't make amends. She even goes for his throat to throttle him! When she's finally pulled off of Oberoi, she grabs a drink and throws it in his face. The Mayor (no name given!) hauls her away and apologizes to everyone for her behavior.
Jimmy pulls a hankie out of his jacket and tells Oberoi to clean himself up. Jimmy then takes his mother's hand and they leave the room. Oberoi is good and mad now, and throws the hankie to the floor without wiping his face. We cut to Jimmy and his mom in a car going home. She thanks him for erasing the bad memory from her heart, and says that she can now die a peaceful death.
Over
at "Oberoi's Hotel" as the sign helpfully describes, we see P.N. nursing a drink
and looking really, really mad. He stares right in to the camera, and tells a
distant Jimmy that he'll pay for insulting him in public like that.
Not all of the Oberoi's are mad at Jimmy though. We cut to Jimmy's place, and see a servant opening the front door. In steps Rita, carrying the small guitar that she played as a child. She walks into the living room where Jimmy seems to just be standing around doing nothing. She presents the guitar to him as if it were Excalibur, and he takes it with the appropriate reverence.
He holds it carefully, and begins lightly strumming the strings. We can't hear him doing this, as the soundtrack is blaring something akin to the theme from The X-Files over everything else. In a moment of bad timing, a loud trumpet sound begins playing as he strums the strings, making it seem as though he were extracting a surprising sound from the instrument.
The camera cuts to Rita giving a blatantly obvious "come hither" look to Jimmy, who is apparently more dense than iron ore. She tells him that she's come for the autograph he promised. He asks her where her autograph book is, and she runs a finger tantalizingly over her lower lip. Jimmy still doesn't seem to get it, so we have a jump cut to a big explanation. This seems to take some time, as they are now outside, and wearing completely different clothes. I suppose it is wise to dress for the occasion, but this seemed to be overdoing it. Ah well. Let's move on!
