The song puts Suraj in a sweet and sappy mood. He says a few things that up until a few minutes ago I'd not have expected this tough guy to say. She eventually takes his hands and lets him touch her face so he has some idea of what she looks like. He tells her that she must be the most beautiful girl in the world, and that he can't "ruin her life." At this, Naina gets a little perplexed. Suraj gets rather agitated and tells her that being with him would only cause her problems, and he escorts her out of the house.
She stands outside the closed door and thinks for a moment. Having an idea, she tries his tactic of making him mad. She tells him that he's scared of getting close to people because that makes him vulnerable. This plan of hers works to the extent of making him mad, but instead of admitting to her claims he tells her to go away. She does, but only after telling him that she loves him and there isn't much he can do about it.
Bhim's been watching all this from the kitchen. He goes over and gives Suraj a hug.
As
if we weren't stressed out enough, we get some more anguish. Naina is at home,
getting ready for bed. She hears Diya talking to someone in her room. As she
goes to the door to investigate, she sees Diya is talking on her little toy
phone to an imaginary Sonia.
She tells "Sonia" that she promises not to touch any of her things or to upset her in any way. She asks why she had to go so far away. Her mother told her that if God loves you very much, He takes you to His home. She asks "Sonia" to ask God to come and take her too so that she can see Sonia again.
This whole scene is at once touching and also very, very sad. Here's this cute little girl missing her sister a lot, while Naina stands outside listening while tears pour down her cheeks. I thought this was a good moment to include. In a lot of movies these days, they don't seem to really explore all the impact such an event could have on a family. I thought it was an effective way to illustrate how the different family members were coping with the loss.
Naina breaks into Gokul's apartment and basically trashes the place in a fit of rage. We see shots of him walking around the city and generally being an ass. Stealing food from carts, wiping his mouth on the clothes of the women he passes, and so forth. When he comes home to see the state his room is in, he spots Naina riding away on her bike. He gets very very angry and formulates a new plan.
Gokul
is seen talking on a pay phone outside of Diya's school while Mom drops her off
for class. He's taunting Naina while he spies on them. Mom says goodbye to Diya
and walks out of the school, passing Gokul as she goes.
We cut to a scene in the classroom where the children are happily clapping and singing. Naina bursts into the room and calls for Diya. One of the children tells her that she's gone. The teacher says that her "Uncle Gokul" came to pick her up.
Gokul and Diya are seen at the zoo, where it looks to us like they're having a grand time. Gokul plays with her and imitates the animals they see all to Diya's delight. Naina goes to the post office asking for Gokul, but they say that he left early mentioning that he had to "repay a debt." At a loss, Naina wanders the streets for a while looking for them, but soon decides to check in at home.
When she arrives, she sees Diya happily sitting in a rocking chair waiting for her. Diya excitedly runs over and tells Naina that "Uncle Gokul" taught her a new poem that he wanted her to tell to Naina as soon as she saw her. I'll quote it here, since it is indeed a truly sinister message, especially provided the channel through which it is being delivered. Imagine this coming out of the mouth of a happy little girl while she waved her arms and kind of danced around a little:
"Three birds on a tree.
The youngest, the middle one, and the eldest.
The eldest one was hunted down.
The entire family was devastated.
The evil hawk found the opportunity
And picked up the youngest one too.
Holding the youngest one in his claws
The devil told the middle one (exaggerated laughing)
The youngest one doesn't satisfy my hunger
You come over to me yourself.
Otherwise one after the other,
I will pluck out all her feathers (exaggerated laughing)."
Naina looks about as shocked as I did when she's finished. Mom comes downstairs and tells them that they are leaving town. Naina tells Mom that she can go if she wants to, but she isn't afraid and is staying there. Mom slaps her in the face, and tells her they are going to Kabir's house that night, then tomorrow are taking the train to Aunt Somebody's place in Nainital.
When
they arrive at Kabir's, they see he's got a photo collection of Sonia taped up
on one of the walls. "Awaaz Do Humko" starts playing on the soundtrack, but it's
the sad version. Naina is caught up in seeing so many pictures of her sister.
She spends a few minutes thinking back on all the happy times they had together
just before the tragedy struck. When she is done, she has a determined look on
her face.
We see her go to Suraj's place. He's playing the piano and doesn't notice her coming in. She goes to the bedroom and takes his pistol from the nightstand, then walks back outside to a waiting taxi. Bhim sees her driving away and rushes inside.
