Sahil asks who put Balli in chains. Balli replies that it was Veer who did it, claiming it was because Veer was afraid of him. Sahil says that his father isn't afraid of anyone. Balli tells him that everyone is afraid of him. Sahil says that means he can do anything he wants, and asks Balli to take him out of the hospital. When Balli asks why, he tells him it's because he's been locked in the room for the last 22 days, and his dad and the doctors won't let him go out. Balli gives him a knowing grin, tells him that he's very smart, and leaves the room.
Balli tells Veer and Naina that he's going to take Sahil for a walk. He leads Sahil down the corridors while Veer and some policemen follow at a slight distance. They chat a little more, and Sahil tells Balli that he wants to be a police inspector when he grows up. Balli is amused by this, and tells him they should be friends so he can help him in the future. Sahil asks Balli where he lives. Balli tells him that he lives in jail. Sahil asks him if he likes it there, but Balli answers his question with one of his own - "Do you like to live in the hospital?" Sahil tells him that he'll get to go home as soon as the operation is over. When asked when he gets to leave jail, Balli tells him that he's leaving today, and to keep it a secret. Bum bum bum!
They
take Balli to the operating room to have his marrow harvested. This is about
when the movie loses its way. Balli's restraints are removed and he gets on the
table. They put the mask on him for his anesthetic, and the doctor asks everyone
not participating to leave the room. Outside, Veer tries to light a smoke, but
his lighter isn't working. In the OR, the doctor notices that the little
breathing bag thing isn't moving, so Balli must be holding his breath. Balli
sits up and starts beating up the medical staff. He yanks the gas line and
ignites it with the piece of Veer's lighter he took. He flings the hose around
like a flamethrower and lights some people on fire.
It
doesn't take long for those waiting outside the OR to figure out that things
have not gone well. Balli comes out into the hallway holding a scalpel to the
doctor's throat. He tells them they can't kill him, since his marrow won't be
usable if he's dead. (Whether or not this is true - I have no idea.) The doctor
backs up his claim, but one of the cops moves in behind them. Veer orders
everyone not to shoot at Balli. Balli throws the doctor through a big window and
runs for the stairs, randomly beating up cops along the way.
After some truly "believable" and "well-executed" stunts, he makes it to the stairs. Veer is waiting for him, and they begin smacking each other around. Veer spends some time getting dragged down the stairs while hanging onto Balli's ankle, much like a four year old who doesn't want his mom to leave him with the babysitter. Eventually Balli cuffs Veer to the railing and gets away.
As he flees the hospital, he runs after a fire truck and grabs onto the outside of it. Veer has managed to unlock the cuffs and heads up to the roof where he knows a sniper is stationed. As the marksman is lining up for his shot, Veer stops him from killing Balli. Balli casts a smirk at them as he pulls away on the truck.
Back
in the hospital, Veer is screaming into the phone to set up roadblocks and start
searching for Balli. Chief comes in and starts bawling him out about how
incompetent this whole deal was. He berates Veer for interfering with the
sniper, when they could have taken the dangerous criminal out before he could do
any harm. Veer explains that he was only trying to save his son's one chance for
survival, but the Chief asks how many lives is Veer going to put in jeopardy for
the sake of his son.
As much as I dislike the Chief, he's got a good point here. There is a "greater good" factor at work in this situation. Balli has already killed over a dozen people, and now that he's out there's no telling what trouble he could cause.
He tells Veer that he's off the case, as he is too personally attached to it. He orders Khan to report to his office to discuss this matter. Veer is horrified to learn this, since he and the Chief both know perfectly well that Khan won't even try to arrest Balli - he'll just kill him if he gets the chance. Chief tells him that he has no interest in bringing Balli in alive. (Wow!)
We
see the meeting where Khan is given his assignment. Amazingly, Veer is there
too. They talk about what happened, and how Chief is tired of looking like an
idiot for screwing up these cases. Khan tells him that he'll get Balli, but
can't guarantee he'll be alive. The Chief tells him "no questions asked," and
sends him on his way. As he is leaving, Khan tells Veer to go and find "another
Balli" for his son. As the camera passes around, we get an oddly lit look at
Veer, and the Intermission title rolls in.
