Anant
flashes back to the glimpses he got of his foe just before the chase began. We
go from that to a POV shot as we move through a ruined building. We see there
are several bodies lying on the floor in different parts of the building, all
with bloodied clothes. The angle changes and we see a slightly younger Anant is
making his way through the corridors and looking rather jumpy. He comes to a
room where he sees another cop is propping up a recently killed body against the
wall. The cop that's doing the posing casually greets Anant with a "Good
afternoon," and starts washing off his hands. Anant asks him what happened here.
The officer tells him that these men were the ones who robbed a bank three days
earlier. He found their hideout, and demanded that they surrender. The opened
fire on him, and he shot back in self defense. What else could he do?
Anant
isn't so easily fooled. He tells Angre (aha!) that he knows who the men were
that robbed the bank, and these aren't them. He also says that it is clear to
him that the real criminals have bribed Angre to kill these innocent men and
stage it to look as if he killed the robbers, covering their tracks. He tells
him that his story isn't working this time. Angre agrees, and says he thought
his account of the events was lacking something. After all, it seems strange
that in a battle of five against one, not a single officer was wounded or
killed. As he's saying this, he moves closer to the gun he had planted on the
body. As he finishes his thought, he fires at Anant. Anant sees what he's doing
and manages to jump out of the way in time. He grapples with Angre and makes him
lose the gun, then proceeds to beat him up. This fight goes on for a good while,
and is pretty brutal. Eventually Anant gets the upper hand and subdues Angre.
Angre vows revenge and tells Anant that he will regret this day.
The sound of a ringing telephone jolts Anant out of his memories. Ramdas picks up the phone, and finds that the owner of the home is calling. However, they are disconnected in the middle of the chat, and he set the receiver back down. Outside, we can hear the engine of the van start up. The officers look outside, and see the headlights come on and the van turns around. Anant tells Ashwin to get everyone together to depart. As Anant watches, he notices the van is acting strangely. It doesn't stop turning around. As he looks on, it just keeps driving in a circle, spitting gravel and squealing its wheels. On one of its passes he sees figures moving behind it, and calls out for everyone to fall back into the house. As he does so, gunfire lashes out at them from the darkness, and Anant takes a hit in his hand.
The
next few minutes are a frantic battle as the few policemen inside the bungalow
fire out of the windows while the terrorists outside unleash a withering barrage
of gunfire at the house. This is shot in a fast paced and somewhat jerky
fashion, which lends it the confused and panicked feel that I'm sure we'd all
have in a spot like this. In between the shots of the men fighting, we also see
Mahalaxmi and Ansari looking terrified as wood splinters all around them and
glass shatters from all of the windows being taken out.
There is a pause in the firing, and a body is shown being tossed to the ground. Anant gestures for Shekhar to bring them inside. We can see that this is Ghorpade, and he's no longer among the living. The terrorists have pinned a note to his shirt. Shekhar picks it up and reads it to the men. "Send Ansari out, else we're coming in." Anant takes a quick count of the remaining ammo each of the men has. None of them have more than seven bullets left. Anant comes to the grim realization that the enemy has purposely forced them to expend their ammo and then issued terms.
Anant
asks Shekhar how much ammo he has left, but Shekhar doesn't answer. He's staring
at the body of Ghorpade. When Anant forcefully repeats the question, Shekhar
snaps and runs over to where Ansari is cuffed to the door handle. He unlocks his
bindings and drags him over to the door. Anant demands to know what he's doing,
and Shekhar tells him he's throwing him out there. Anant tells him that's crazy
- he's called for backup and it will be there soon. Shekhar points out that they
don't exactly have a lot of time to wait for them. The cops should arrive in
time to make a report and to count the bodies. Anant tells him they'll fight it
out, but Shekhar mentions the fact that no one has any bullets left to put up a
real fight. Shekhar says they should let him go this time, and they can catch
him again. There's no way they're going to live through this if they don't do
what the terrorists say.
Anant asks him if he's so afraid of dying, why did he put on that uniform? He tells him that this uniform means that you value duty over your own life. Shekhar says he understands. He says that Anant is an unsuccessful officer. Sure, he never took bribes, but he didn't really accomplish anything either. He says that Anant thinks that if he dies in the course of this mission that he will become famous and a martyr, and bring honor to his family. Shekhar says that he refuses to die for Anant's selfish purposes, and orders him to step aside.
