Anant
refuses to back down. He tells Shekhar that as long as he is alive, he is in
charge of this mission. He tells them that Ansari isn't going anywhere, and that
is his order. Shekhar points his gun in Anant's face, and Anant returns the
favor. However, Ashwin steps in and also pulls his gun on Shekhar. He tells him
that he always knew he was dishonest, but today he also sees that he is a
coward. Shekhar tells him that he's doing this to spare all of their lives.
Ashwin tells Shekhar that his actions have nothing to do with their lives - he
is doing it for his conscience, and his conscience tells him that Anant is
right. Shekhar asks if he would shoot him to spare the life of Ansari, the ISI
traitor. Finally after all this time, Ansari speaks. He grabs Shekhar's gun and
points it at his own head and begs them to shoot him.
As you can imagine, this comes as a surprise to everyone in the room. Ansari tells them that the people outside aren't trying to free him - they're trying to kill him. He says he is paying the price for being an honest patriot. We go to a flashback where Ansari tells us what he means.
We
see Ansari talking to someone in a hospital. The person is demanding death
certificates for some bodies that were brought in earlier. Ansari tells him he
won't do that until a proper post-mortem has been conducted. He knows that they
were not killed in the riots. These men were poisoned, then beaten after death
to inflict bruises. He won't write a false statement for this man, who tells him
that he might be putting himself in danger for not going along with this. Ansari
tells him too bad, and refuses. A man standing nearby comes over to talk to
Ansari. He tells him that his name is Bhaskar, a freelance journalist and he
wants to talk about the bodies. Ansari tells him he is not able to discuss that
information since it is part of a police case. The reporter tells him that there
is a conspiracy surrounding those corpses and the police are in on it.
This accusation gives pause to Ansari, and he listens to the story. Bhaskar explains that there is a very important man involved here - Minister Deodhar. According to Bhaskar, Deodhar engineered the riots. He had been crooked for a long time, and the three men that were poisoned knew what he was up to. They had been collecting evidence of Deodhar's crimes and could expose him. Deodhar found out about them and called them together for a meeting. At the meeting, he poisoned them and had the bodies beaten and left on the streets where the riots had been taking place. Ansari asks what he wants him to do. Bhaskar says he has the file of evidence against Deodhar, and is going to publish it. If he could also have the reports on the corpses he will add it to the evidence and see that it is all published in the next day's paper. After a moment of hesitation, Ansari gives him the reports. He tells him that if he learns anything else, he'll contact Bhaskar. Bhaskar tells him to make sure he reads the paper tomorrow.
The
next morning we see Ansari looking through the paper and seeming a little
agitated. His mother brings in his son and tells him they're going to pray for
the holidays in another part of town. Ansari takes Bhaskar's card and goes to
call him and ask why he didn't see the article in the paper. He speaks to the
man on the other end of the line, but it isn't Bhaskar. The stranger asks him
what the reporter told him. Ansari quickly figures out that something has gone
wrong, and hangs up.
Ansari goes to work, and carries on his normal day. However, he is interrupted in the halls by a television reporter who wants to talk about the increasingly famous bodies. He says he's not able to comment on those, but as he does so he sees Bhaskar being wheeled in on a gurney with a very bloody throat. It would seem that his windpipe has been severed, as he is unable to speak. He moves his mouth as he attempts to tell Ansari what happened, but no sound comes out. All the while, the cameraman from the news crew is right behind Ansari filming everything. Eventually he expires. Bhaskar, that is. The cameraman is fine.
We cut to a little later. Ansari is handed a phone to take a call. The same mystery man he spoke to before asks him what Bhaskar told him before he died, and also wants to know where the file of evidence is. He also makes some threats against Ansari's family. Ansari tells him that he doesn't have the file, and even if he did they wouldn't get it.
Another
cut to later in the day. Ansari is working at some kind of outdoor clinic when
some townspeople come over and begin accusing him of bringing shame upon their
town. He has no idea what the man is talking about. The man says the police
recovered guns and explosives from his house (we saw that part!) and that
rioters have set fire to his home. Ansari races home to find his house has been
completely charred. He races inside frantically searching for his family, but
there is no sign of them. He calls out to his neighbors asking if they've seen
anyone, but they all close their windows and say nothing. He cries out in fury
and anguish as he stands in the smoking wreckage of his home.
A moment later, he hears voices in his house asking where Deodhar's file is. He looks up to see uniformed policemen standing there. However, they also mention how they were the ones to set the fire. As he stares at them in disbelief, the flashback ends.
