The
film begins with some very lovely scenic shots of the countryside around the
town of Ooty.
Rolling hills and lush green fields are paraded past, and it looks like a very
nice place to visit. A voiceover from our heroine Sanjana begins playing over
some of these shots, explaining that this is where it all began. This is where
she was married, and where she learned what the true meaning of sacrifice and
love were.
However, to look at the official kickoff to the whole story we need to check in with a group of college students on a camping trip. Sanjana's voiceover finishes up by saying that what happened with these youngsters would eventually impact her life as well.
We
join the group of students as they play Spin The Bottle. Yep, these are college
kids all right. The bottle is given a vigorous spin and points to a pretty girl
(Nisha) in a red sweater. A somewhat heavier young man (Rohit) cries out in excitement as he
sees who he gets to plant a big smooch on. Nisha doesn't seem too interested,
and says that there's no way she's kissing this guy. Peer pressure is heavily
applied, and the two of them stand up and face each other. Nisha leans in close
to Rohit, who has his eyes closed and his lips puckered. She says softly,
"I'm... not going to kiss you!" then runs away. Rohit realizes that the
chase is on, and takes off after her.
Nisha goes into a densely but strangely uniformly wooded area.
The trees here are almost laid out in a grid. I don't know if this is a common thing to do when planting trees, but none of the people that enter it make any comments about how it is arranged. Either it's an established style of landscaping, or it's the result of one really lazy production designer!
As
we look down towards the pair of kids, we get a sense that there's an eerie
quality to this patch of woods. Nisha manages to loose Rohit by ducking around a
tree and trying to keep quiet. He inexplicably doesn't see her doing this,
despite being about ten feet behind her. Instead, he runs past her to see a
bungalow up ahead. Thinking she has gone inside, Rohit calls out that the
bungalow doesn't belong to them, and she shouldn't go in there. He then begs for
a kiss and a stop to the fooling around.
As Rohit continues to embarrass himself, Nisha slowly sneaks off and plods back towards the campfire. This is when she notices that the woods are kind of scary. An odd burst of wind tousles her long hair, and she turns around quickly to see what caused the disturbance. She scans the woods carefully, but sees nothing. Now genuinely spooked, she begins tiptoeing backwards in what she hopes is the right direction.
Somewhere
in the distance behind her, a shrill, piercing sound, resembling a mixture of an
animal cry and a woman's scream tears through the air, causing her to quickly
spin around to face the general area. Nisha calls out for Rohit, but gets no
response. She then goes for a less specific audience, and asks who is out there.
Still no reply is heard. Nisha begins walking again, only to hear another shriek
a few seconds later, also behind her.
The new scream causes her to stop in her tracks and look around nervously again. The shot cuts to an overhead view of Nisha, who is clinging to her own hair in fear. She slowly looks up towards us, and with an expression of terror on her face, she screams loudly at what she sees.
