After this sultry and admittedly imaginative daydream, we join Munna and Pakiya on some rocks. Munna confesses that he wants to marry Mili. Pakiya thinks it's a great idea, and encourages Munna to go and propose right away. Munna is nervous though, since Mili never takes him seriously. He's afraid that if he were to ask her that she may laugh at him. Pakiya tells him to get over it, and Munna finally agrees to ask her as soon as a good time presents itself.
The next day the group goes to an amusement park. They split into two groups to do what they want. The parents and Motilal head one direction, while Munna, Mili, and Pakiya go another. Pakiya tells Munna that this is a good time to pop the question, and leaves the two alone to give him a chance. After several false starts, Munna fails to complete his task and instead makes up something about being scared on a roller coaster. This tickles Mili and they all run off together to check out another ride.
Quick
jump to (I'm assuming) the next day. Mili is practicing her dancing on the beach
this time. This is done to the tune called "Beat of Rangeela" that's blaring out
of her little boom box radio. While she's carrying on, Kamal happens to be
walking along this stretch of beach. Now, I'll admit Mili dancing around on the
beach like this would probably catch my eye as well. However, he takes a seat
about 10 feet away and stares at her while she's doin' her thing. Bold!
Once she has worn herself out, she finally notices Kamal sitting there staring at her. She says hello, and he asks who she is. She explains that she's actually working on the same movie he's doing as one of the dancers. He sort of looks dumbfounded, then walks past her off the beach. Before he goes, he turns and does an "OK!" gesture followed by a thumbs-up. Mili is ecstatic at the seal of approval.
Some time later, we find ourselves in Kamal's dressing room. TP and TD are lamenting that their leading lady has gotten married, and her husband forbids her from doing any love scenes in the movie. Apparently there are a lot of them, and she's refused to complete the picture. Here in the states, I'm pretty sure this would constitute a breach of contract, but there could be different rules over there. Anyway, they're out a leading lady.
Say, didn't Kamal just meet a young lady that he was very impressed with?
Over
at Mili's house, the phone is ringing. She picks it up and shortly thereafter
looks stunned. She goes tearing out of the house to find Munna. When she does,
she tells him that Kamal wants her to play the lead in his next film, and that
she's to take a screen test the next day!
Boom! We're at the screen test. Mili's all gussied up in a fancy dress and has been all done up by the makeup people. As Kamal looks on hopefully, TD gives her some last minute directions and they begin shooting. With all the excitement and pressure, poor Mili is unable to deliver her lines. They do several takes, with TD getting more flustered each time. Eventually they cut the lights and Mili runs off the stage.
Even though I had a suspicion something like this was coming, this was hard to watch. Urmila Matondkar has a very sweet and innocent face. She does a great job of looking like a deer in headlights here as she struggles and stammers to try and say her lines. Add to this our knowledge of how much her character Mili wants this opportunity and is in the process of dropping the ball, and it gets even more excruciating. As she gets teary-eyed it's just heartbreaking.
Kamal goes to see her in the dressing room. He comforts her and tells her that stage fright hits all of them at times, and has even frozen him up before as well. He tells her that they'll let her go home and practice more, and will have a second chance tomorrow.
That night at Munna's place, he's relaxing on his bed and having a drink. Mili comes in and asks him to read her lines with her. She tosses him the script and then launches into her role. Munna is caught unaware, and for a moment believes that she's really talking to him. Her dialog fits well with his situation. She asks him if he loves her, and how she's never thought of him that way, etc. He sits there dumbfounded for a while until she tells him he needs to read the other part in the script. Realizing what's going on, he reads the text flatly back to her with no inflection or emotion. She gets angry that he's not doing it "in character," and he flares up back at her.
She explains how poorly the day's audition went, and how he was the only person she could come to for help. When he hears this he agrees to take it seriously and they begin working on it.
At the next audition, she nails the lines and does a terrific performance! The whole crew was on hand to see her try out, and gives her a big round of applause when she is finished.
