Little
Ramesh is seen running over to Simi, and offers her something to eat. She says
she doesn't like what he's offering, so he changes the subject. He asks Simi if
she knows what he's going to do when he grows up. He doesn't give her time to
guess before answering his own question. He tells Simi that along with her,
they'll go kill the man that killed her father. (Oh my!)
Simi doesn't seem impressed. She merely asks him why he'd want to do that. Ramesh replies that it's because she is his friend, but she never laughs. He asks her why that is, and she tells him it's because she doesn't like anything. Ramesh takes a seat next to Simi and tells her that he's going to tell her a story, and she is to tell him if what happened in the story was good or bad.
He
goes through and tells her a tale of a man breaking into a house to rob it,
("That's bad!") but there was nothing inside to take ("That's good!"). In a fit
of anger, the robber took a stick and went to the man's bedroom and hit the bed
as hard as he could ("That's bad!"). However, the man was not sleeping in his
bed ("That's good!")! Ramesh forgets the rest of the story ("That's bad!") but
he gets Simi to laugh ("That's good!"). The two of them have a little musical
interlude as they run around on the beach and play in the water. I might also
add that they run past a man wearing a trench coat and a top hat, playing the
violin while waist-deep in the ocean. Ooohhhkay. Various other scenes of the
kids being the best of pals go past as they seem to be having a fantastic time.
All good things must come to an end, and this phase is no exception. After we see the two of them drifting into a little puppy love, the fateful day arrives when a new Auntie and Uncle arrive to adopt Simi. She is told that she will no longer stay in the orphanage, and will go to live with them. Simi isn't sure what to say. She stares at Ramesh, who looks absolutely angry at this new development.
A
fade to Ramesh looking over the sea at dusk shows us Simi trying to say goodbye
to her friend. They have a long silence until finally Simi speaks up. She tells
Ramesh that she's leaving now. Ramesh doesn't have much to say. She tells him
that it doesn't really matter, since they'll meet again to make good on the
promise that Ramesh made to her. He says he remembers, and they both say
goodbye. We get three repeated shots of the two of them letting go of each
others' hands as the "we're saying goodbye" theme is plinked out on a
synthesizer.
Ramesh runs up to the rooftop of the orphanage and watches the car pull away. Simi looks out of the back window to see him, and the voice-over starts up again. We hear that Ramesh was no longer content to stay at the orphanage after Simi left, so one night he escaped with the hopes of finding Simi again. We have a montage of Ramesh running through the streets of Mumbai calling out Simi's name. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but I think his efforts are likely to fail.
After a few minutes of this, Ramesh trips and falls in the street, and finds himself at the feet of Girdharilal. Girdharilal asks Ramesh where he's headed, but all Ramesh can say is that he's lost his way. Girdharilal says that he shouldn't worry - he will show him the right way to go. The voice-over comes in again to let us all know that Girdharilal actually gives Ramesh his start on a life of crime. Specifically, a safe-cracker thief.
We
go into another montage. This time we see lots of newspaper headlines about
big-time heists and mysterious jewel thieves. Interspersed with these shots are
glimpses of hands turning combination locks, skeleton keys being brandished, and
items being taken out of safes. During all of this we hear the first strains of
our hero's theme song. This is comprised of that Mortal Kombat theme
again, with women chanting "Ro-mee-oh!" Trust me, it's quite catchy. The montage
ends with the taking of a gigantic, and I do mean gigantic diamond. This sets
off an alarm, sending Romeo (as Ramesh will be referred to from here on out)
skittering down a drainpipe and running through some very wet streets while
being pursued by vicious attack dogs. Things look a bit grim for our hero!
