Afterthoughts
I'll admit that this movie was a lot better than I expected. When I was told it's basically a remake of Scream (a movie I rather enjoyed) I went into it expecting, well, less than what I got. Aside from the underwater sequences, the rest of the film is quite well made, and has some decent special effects. The similarities to the source material were also there, but again just a little different as to not completely mirror the original. The motives of the killers, the whole scary guy in a mask motif, and the two murderers working together were all cribbed directly from the original movie, but much of the rest of it was fairly new.
I did think including the two lines in the whole movie that make references to other movies were tacked on. Scream was all about and made for fans of horror movies. There didn't seem to be much of that in this one, so those lines stood out as being a little unrelated to the happenings of the time, and just seemed to be there to point to the source film.
The cast was enjoyable! I've heard some say that this was probably not the best launch vehicle for Tanishaa (Mahek)'s movie career, and I would probably agree with that. There wasn't a lot of room for character development in this one, but I will give her a lot of credit for handling what was in all probability a very physical role well. She did a lot of fighting and portrayed a very tough lady, which is always fun to watch! So, while not a landmark film nor a particularly notable one, I think she did well with the role she had, and I liked her.
Dino Morea (Rocky) was also fine. He was a cocky tough guy for most of the film, but out of the three movies I've seen him in, he seems to be comfortable with that kind of role. So, he was true to form and did fine with what he had to work with. No real complaints about him here!
This was my first movie with Karan Nath (Suraj) so I can't compare him to other roles, but I thought he was good in this one. He makes the transition from a very nice considerate person to murderous jerk pretty well!
This was a large cast, so I won't go into all of them here. However I can say that I don't think anyone really stood out as being bad or screwing up much, so I'll give them points for that! A good effort by everyone.
Negatives:
The underwater scenes. Didn't even come close to making me think they were in the ocean. Effect props, the visible shape of the pool, and so on. This was my biggest complaint about the whole movie.
I think that the horror movies do better without the songs. These films should be about pacing and momentum, building up the dread and tension. The songs really throw a wrench into that and kill the "scary movie" mood, particularly in this film.
This one was a little long in the running time. I realize that the typical Bollywood film is at least two and a half hours or more, but this one could have done better without the songs, which would also cut the running time a bit.
Positives:
Many of the deaths were done very well. In particular, the knife through the face in the locker room was pretty good. Also, Rhea's neck slice looked decent.
I liked Mahek's character. In so many horror movies, the victims just curl up and die. Mahek fought back, and she held her own more than once. I was pleased to see that she was a lot more spirited than her horror movie predecessors.
For a horror movie, it had a pretty detailed plot. The whole love triangle was a nice touch, as well as factoring in Gehna's feelings for Rocky. It's nice to see a slasher film that has more to it than just stage blood!
Here we have the ominous Size 8! I had a hard time coming up with a good icon for this film, so I hope no one is too disappointed.
